On this day, in 1960, the police opened fire and killed 69 people taking part in a peaceful protest in Sharpeville, South Africa. In 1966, the General Assembly of the UN declared the day the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and urged the international community to increase its efforts to eliminate all racial discrimination.
